IMATYC Constitution is Online!

Greetings everyone!

You'll notice that the IMATYC Consitution is now online!
On the right panel of this webpage, under the links, you will find a link to the current .pdf file of our constitution.

Also, just a reminder, if you would like to be invited to be an author for our website, which means that you will have access to post items of interest, begin discussions, please send a quick email to our webmaster (Brent Hamilton - hamilbre@niacc.edu), and he will send you an invitation.

Our hope is that this website will be a useful portal for continuing and for starting new discussions and for sharing important information with the rest of the math faculty across Iowa.

Have a great fall!

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium

Diana Gonzalez shared in one of the sessions information about the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and encouraged us to investigate the following link to provide feedback as they connect higher education with the Common Core State Standards.

Fall Conference: business meeting

Our fall conference is at Indian Hills Community College today.  This picture was taken during our business meeting.  President Diane Mason led our meeting and we discussed corrections to our constitution, which will be updated on this site.  New officers were selected.  We also voted to purchase our new domain, imatyc.org.  We decided to also further our participaton in the discussion of ALEKS placement.

Our AMATYC Regional Vice-President, Nicole Lang, also joined us for the day, providing us with national information and also leading one of the sessions on Statway/Quantway.

We would like to thank our President Diane Mason and Secretary Tim Wright for putting together such a great fall conference!

Special thanks to the exhibitors who were present: MML, ALEKS, Hawkes, Cengage, Mathematica & Equations.

Fall Conference

Greetings!

Fall classes have started and most of us are getting used to our schedules for another semester!

It’s time now to think about the annual IMATYC conference.

This year you are invited to the Ottumwa, IA campus of Indian Hills Community College on October 12.  We’ll open registration at 8:30 a.m. and serve breakfast treats as we gather until the opening session at 9:00.

The conference will feature the following:

1.  Representatives of the Iowa regents’ universities will update us on their expanded use of ALEKS as a placement tool.  Some of our colleagues met with them last April and will share a report.

2.  Two tracks of sessions will be offered – one centering around technology and the other concerning retention efforts.

3.  Several vendors will offer exhibits.

4.  The Business meeting will direct us to look at the IMATYC Constitution and to elect officers for 2014 and delegates to the 2012 AMATYC conference in November.

A registration form is attached to this email.  Once again, the registration fee is very modest at $25 – a good buy, indeed!  Please preregister yourself and pass another copy of the form along to a colleague.

We look forward to hosting you on Oct 12!

Diane Mason, 2012 President IMATYC

Tim Wright, 2012 Secretary IMATYC

Hello AMATYC Members!

I hope that you are enjoying the remaining few weeks of summer vacation.  It does seem that it gets shorter each year, doesn’t it?

I am writing to remind you that online registration is now open for the 38th annual AMATYC Conference to be held on November 8-11, 2012.  This year’s location is Jacksonville, Florida.  Our Local Events Coordinator, Jerrett Dumouchel, has assured me that this will also be a conference to remember.

The conference hotel is the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.   Located in North Florida, the weather is typically beautiful in November and be sure to check out the tour information posted on the website.   I hope that you are planning to attend this important event – attending the annual conference is a great way to grow professionally, to renew friendships and to learn new skills and ideas to prepare our students for the challenges ahead.

The deadline for the discounted registration is September 30 (if sent by mail) or October 7.  Please encourage your colleagues that are not yet members to register online as well; it’s not a problem.  If they are not already in our database as a prospective member, they can simply log into the site as a visitor, create a profile and register for the conference.  Of course, there’s an opportunity to join AMATYC if they wish.

Lastly, consider a donation to the Foundation as you register for the conference.  Just before you exit the shopping cart, continue shopping to select “Donations” from the shop-for menu in the online store; then, select a fund of your choice to support.  For any donations received through conference registrations, the donor’s name will automatically be entered for a drawing for a complimentary conference registration for Anaheim 2013.

Please visit the AMATYC website, http://www.amatyc.org/Events/conferences/2012Jacksonville/  for information regarding both conference registration and hotel reservations.

I look forward to seeing you in Jacksonville!

Sincerely,

Jim
