Registration

Hooray! It's time to start registering for the annual IMATYC Conference!

When: Friday, October 11

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Student Life Center at Belmont Campus at Scott Community College

Registration Fee: $25 for in-person

Virtual Registration Fee: There is no fee. Please register to virtually attend.

The food registration deadline is Wednesday, October 9.

Learn about digital accessibility, its importance and how easy it can be to ensure your documents are accessible.  We will show you the tools and resources that will help you create ADA-compliant and accessible documents for your department, classroom or website.  We will walk through the steps to make a non-compliant document fully accessible.

Join us for an informative and collaborative session designed to bridge the gap between secondary and postsecondary mathematics education. This joint presentation will delve into the recent updates to the high school math standards and explore new math pathways that align with both secondary and postsecondary expectations.
Our session will highlight key changes in the high school math standards, including the Shifts and accessible courses and pathways in high school. We’ll also examine how these updates impact the transition to postsecondary education and workforce readiness.
 
 
Session 1 Option C) Building Bridges between Data Science and Mathematics at the Secondary and Post-Secondary Levels

 Our discussion will focus on an interactive lesson that emphasizes common concepts between data science and mathematics.  The lesson uses regression to build a bridge between data science ideas and prior mathematical experiences through a shared language. This activity can be used with high school students and has been used as a tool to develop preservice teacher knowledge to teach data science. 
 
Second Session
Session 2 Option A) Instructional Design Best Practices

Want to know more about best practices in Instructional Design? This session will delve into SUNY’s OSCQR rubric and RSI guidelines to improve student success. Discover how user-friendly, visually appealing, and intuitive course design can positively impact the learning experience. Plus, we will explore creative ideas to challenge and engage your students.

Session 2 Option B) Active Learning

In this session you will get to experience what an active learning classroom looks and feels like.  We will share how we are implementing more active learning in our course and share some resources.  This model of active learning is based in part on what we experienced at the AMATYC Teaching for Prowess Summer Institute and from Peter Liljedahl’s work “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics”.
 

Session 2 Option C) Using Children’s Work in Mathematics Courses for Elementary Teachers

We will share how we at UNI use videos and written samples of children’s work and thinking about mathematics tasks to motivate discussions of mathematical concepts in our classes for elementary teachers. Future teachers benefit from seeing how the mathematics they learn appears and is represented in the elementary classroom, which contributes to their understanding of the content and its relevance to teaching elementary mathematics.

Join us for an engaging session that delves into the intersection of Instructional Design, Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI), and Canvas course design using SUNY’s OSCQR Rubric. Our panel of experienced instructors will share their insights, strategies, and best practices in course design to enhance the learner experience as well as increase student success.
 
Session 3 Option BAndragogy: the study of how adults learn

This session explores the dynamics of student learning, with a focus on how adults navigate the phases of learning and the forgetting curve to become more independent. We'll discuss common challenges students encounter and effective strategies. We will talk about practical teaching tips to enhance student success. The session will conclude with artificial intelligence's (AI's) impacted on courses.
 
 
Session 3 Option C)   Engagement in Mathematics Using Projects

Come learn about different projects you can use to engage students in math classes from Algebra to Calculus 2! We’ll talk through how projects can be used, grading, and materials for these will be distributed so you can try them yourself. If you already use projects, feel free to bring yours and share with others. Some of the projects we will discuss: 3D models of volumes of revolution (Calculus 2), Sine Spaghetti (PreCalculus/Trigonometry), Holiday themed graphing pictures (any level), Life Project (Math for liberal arts), and more!
